FAQ

  • Where is Wingate located?
    Wingate is located in St Adolphe d’Howard, about one hour north of Montreal. Our address is: 1580 ch lac-du-trois-frères St Adolphe d'Howard, Québec J0T 2B0
  • What is included in the camp fees?
    GST/PST, canteen, laundry service, out-of-camp field trips*, and transportation to and from camp are all included in the camp fees. *Additional costs for grade 8 and 9 field trips will apply.
  • How do campers get to and from camp?
    Bus transportation to and from Montreal is provided for sleepaway campers. We do not provide transportation for day or weekend campers.
  • Can I get a tour of the camp before my child starts?
    Yes! We host an annual open house in the month of June. Please see our important dates to find out more.
  • How long is camp? Does everyone start and finish at the same time?
    Camp runs for 6.5 weeks and the majority of our campers arrive on day 1 and stay for either 4.5 or 6.5 weeks. We also offer a 2-week Starter Camp option for our youngest sleepaway campers (finishing grades 1-3). Please see our Dates & Rates for more information.
  • Who are the staff and how are they chosen?
    Many of our staff have grown up at Wingate as campers and have graduated to become staff, bringing with them their experience and understanding of the Wingate community. Alongside our local staff, we hire a wealth of staff from all over the world who bring their unique perspective to camp.
  • What type of training do staff receive?
    All our staff participate in our on-site pre-camp training. Staff learn about caring for the health and wellbeing of campers, emergency procedures, behaviour management techniques, leadership skills, and camp expectations. Waterfront staff and activity specialists also participate in any relevant special training and certifications, including lifeguarding & first aid courses, boat driving courses, and wall climbing certifications. All of our staff are CPR certified.
  • What happens if my child gets sick or is injured at camp?
    Our camp infirmary is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with our medical team. Our team consists of our camp doctor, nurses and our infirmary coordinator. Most medical issues can be managed in camp by our staff, however we are 10 minutes away from the St. Agathe hospital if needed.
  • What if my child breaks a brace during camp?
    We have an orthodontic kit in camp which our medical staff is trained to use for minor fixes. If it is something we cannot fix in camp, we will be in touch to let you know.
  • How can I see pictures of my camper?
    We post pictures daily on Bunk 1. Information on how to create a Bunk 1 account will be sent to you closer to the summer.
  • Can I extend my campers stay once they are in camp?
    Yes! If there is room in your camper's bunk, you will be able to extend your camper's stay.
  • Do you allow electronics in camp?
    Wingate is a screen free camp. We feel more than ever, campers need a real break from electronics. The following items are not allowed in camp: Cell phones (even if the SIM card is removed) Electronic handheld games such as PSP’s Nintendo DS Laptop computer iPad Kindle or any reading device capable of connecting to WIFI Apple Watch You are welcome to bring the following items: Older generation iPod with no screen MP3 Player that plays music is permitted ( i.e. no ability to play videos, or store photos) Inexpensive camera Cell phones are strictly prohibited in camp.
  • Can I send a package to my camper?
    Parents can send their campers one package per session. Food, candy, and beverages are prohibited.
  • Should I send money to camp with my child?
    It is not necessary to send your child to camp with spending money. Campers can choose to bring a small amount of money to buy snacks on out of camp trips. Spending money is completely optional, as we send a meals/snacks on all camp trips. Additional information about spending money for campers completing grades 9 and 10 will be sent closer to the summer.

  • What happens on rainy days?
    At Wingate, we have amazing indoor facilities. During rainy days, campers use the pool, arts & crafts, gym, Skydome, Thunderdome, Ice Palace, Rock climbing walls, Pottery, Cooking & Baking Studio, Power Dome and so much more.
  • How does laundry work?
    Laundry for all campers is done once a week. All items, including socks and underwear, should be clearly marked with your camper’s name.
  • Are there out of camp field trips?
    Yes, we have several out of camp field trips during the summer. We take our campers to the movies, waterslides as well as visits to other camps for intercamp activities. **Grade 9 and 10 programs have additional out of camp trips.
  • Is there Swim Instruction at camp?
    Junior campers participate in swim instruction three times a week. Inter campers participate in swim instruction twice weekly.
  • Can I chose my bed?
    We want you to feel comfortable and happy during your stay at camp. Before you arrive, we'll ask you to fill out a form with your bed preference - top or bottom bunk, near a window or not, etc. - and we'll do our best to accommodate your wishes. Just remember that everyone's needs are different, so we might not be able to give everyone their first choice. But don't worry, we promise you'll have a cozy spot to rest your head every night.
  • Do I have to go in the lake?
    We understand that some campers may feel nervous about swimming in the lake, but we want to assure you that our waterfront is a safe and fun place to be! In order to participate in boating or jumping on The Blob, you will need to take a swim test and you don't want to miss out on all the fun! Plus, the water is so beautiful and refreshing on a hot summer day.
  • What if I don't like the food?
    We understand that everyone has different tastes when it comes to food, but don't worry! We make sure to serve meals that are both healthy and delicious. There is a salad bar at every lunch with lots of fresh veggies to choose from, and we always have fresh fruit on hand for a sweet treat. Plus, if you're not a fan of the main dish, we have pasta available as an alternative. We promise you won't go hungry at camp. We also offer a vegetarian, gluten-free or kosher-style option. Just make sure to let us know on your registration form.
  • What do I do if someone in the bunk isn't being kind?
    We want everyone at camp to have a fun and safe time, and being kind is a big part of that! If someone in your bunk isn't being kind, there are a few things you can do: Talk to your counselor. They are here to help you and want to make sure everyone is happy and safe. Let them know what's going on and they can help you figure out what to do next. Stand up for yourself. It can be hard to do, but sometimes telling someone that their behavior isn't okay is the best way to stop it. You can say something like, "Please don't talk to me like that" or "I don't like it when you do that." Be a good friend. If you see someone being mean to someone else, you can help by being kind to the person who is being picked on. You can invite them to play a game with you or sit with them at lunch. Remember, it's important to always treat others the way you want to be treated. If you're kind and respectful, it will make camp a great experience for everyone
  • Will I be in a bunk with my friends?
    Yes! When you register, you can request to be in a bunk with your friends. While we can't promise that all of your friends will be in your bunk, we will do our best to make sure that you are together with at least some of the kids on your list. We want you to have a great time at camp and being with your friends is a big part of that.
  • How will I know how to find everything?
    Don't worry, Wingate is small and easy to navigate, so you won't get lost. Before camp starts, we have an open house where you can take a tour, meet staff members, and get familiar with the layout. And once camp starts, your counsellors will be there to guide you and ensure that you always know where you're going.
  • Will I be able to see my siblings at camp?
    Of course! Wingate is a small camp, which means you'll get to see your siblings every day. You'll see them at flagpole, all meals, and at all camp-wide activities. Plus, you'll have plenty of Free Play time to hang out with them so don't worry, you are never far from your siblings at Wingate.
  • Can I decorate the area around my bed?
    Yes! You are allowed to decorate the area around your bed. We encourage campers to bring small items that will help make them feel more comfortable and at home during their stay at Wingate.
  • What do I do if I don't feel well?
    If you ever don't feel well while you're at Wingate, don't worry! We have a camp doctor who will be here to help you. The doctor runs two clinics every day - one after breakfast, and one after dinner. So if you ever need to see a doctor, that's when you can go. But if it's not something that needs a doctor's help, you can always talk to our nurse. She's always available and can help you with anything that's bothering you. So if you ever don't feel well, just let one of our staff members know and we'll make sure you get the care you need.
  • Can I call my parents?
    No, you cannot call your parents while at camp. However, we want you to have the best experience possible, which means we encourage you to immerse yourself in camp life and enjoy the activities and friendships that come with it. If you ever need to talk to someone, your counselors and the head staff team are always available to help you.
  • Can I bring my phone to camp?
    At Wingate, we want to encourage campers to fully immerse themselves in the camp experience and build relationships with their peers and counselors. Therefore, we do not allow any electronics except for a music player without a screen. We understand that it may be difficult to be without your phone for a few weeks, but we believe that it will enhance your overall camp experience and allow you to fully embrace the activities and community at Wingate. So, leave your phone at home and get ready to make memories that will last a lifetime,
  • Do I have to go on the overnight? I'm worried about sleeping in a tent.
    We understand that sleeping in a tent can be scary for some campers. However, our overnight experience is an important part of the camp tradition. It's a chance to bond with your fellow campers and make memories that will last a lifetime. Our Tripping staff will be there to help you feel comfortable and safe throughout the night. Plus, you'll get to roast marshmallows, sing campfire songs, and stargaze! We promise it will be a fun and exciting adventure that you won't want to miss.
  • What happens at Free Play?
    Free Play takes place after dinner and you can do whatever you want! You can hang out on lower field and play a pick-up game with your friends, or you can go to the tennis courts and practice your swing. You can even go skating if the Ice Palace is open! If you're a senior camper, you can take this time to shower. The choice is yours! There are always staff on duty during free play to make sure that everyone is safe.
  • What happens at Rest Hour?
    Rest Hour is after lunch and is an important time during the day when everyone takes a break from all the fun activities to rest. It's a time to recharge our batteries so that we can have even more fun later on. During rest hour, you can read a book, take a nap, write a letter or just relax and chat with your friends.
  • What sports equipment should I bring to camp?
    When it comes to sports equipment, there are a few things you'll definitely need to bring with you. First and foremost, you'll need to bring a tennis racquet. We have plenty of tennis courts here at Wingate, and tennis is one of our most popular sports. So be sure to pack your racquet! In addition to your tennis racquet, there are a few other sports equipment items you might want to consider bringing with you. If you like playing baseball, we suggest bringing your own glove. And if you're interested in ice skating, don't forget to bring your skates and a helmet for safety. For campers who want to play hockey you'll need to bring full equipment to participate. We also have ball hockey here at Wingate, so if that's something you're interested in, you should bring your own stick. And if you're a fan of pickleball or football, you might want to bring your own racquet or cleats. Remember, these additional items are optional - but if you have them and want to use them, it's always a good idea to bring them along. Remember to label all your equipment with your name, so you don't lose anything.
  • What time do I have to go to bed?
    We know that getting enough sleep is important for a fun-filled day at camp. That's why we have specific bedtimes for our campers based on their age group. Evening activity ends at 8:45 pm and it is followed by Milk & Cookies in the Dining Hall. After that, we have something called Wall Time when campers can hang out with their friends until curfew. For our junior campers (grades 1-3), curfew is at 9:00 pm. For our intermediate campers (grades 4-6), curfew is at 9:30 pm. And for our senior campers (grades 7-9), curfew is at 10:00 pm. At curfew, campers must be inside the bunk. Lights out is half an hour after curfew.
  • How can I communicate with my child during camp?
    You will be able to send your campers emails daily. Emails are handed out at dinner time. Campers are encouraged to write letters home often and we have designated letter writing days during the week.
  • How will I know how my first time camper is doing?
    If you have a first time camper with us, you can expect a check-in call from a member of our leadership team within the first 3-4 days of camp.
  • Can I speak to my child on their birthday?
    Yes, you can! Campers will call home after dinner on their birthdays. Unfortunately, campers cannot call home for a family member’s birthday.
  • Who can I talk to if I have a question or concern?
    During the summer, you will be able to call the camp office. Our office manager will direct the call to the relevant staff.
  • Can campers bring food to camp?
    Yes, campers are allowed to bring a limited amount of food to camp. Food should be brought in one plastic bin that can fit under the bed. The box should be a maximum height of 6.5 inches. Any food not contained in this bin will be discarded. All food must be peanut and nut free. **For campers in the junior section, all food not consumed within the first week of camp, will be discarded**
  • How do you handle a picky eater?
    We always have several food options available alongside our main meals. Plain pasta and a full salad bar is always served with lunch and dinner, and yogurt, cereals, toast, bagels, and fresh fruit are all available during breakfast.
  • Can you accommodate special dietary requirements?
    Yes, we can accommodate special dietary requirements. Please ensure that your medical form is up to date with any requirements. If you are concerned about dietary requirements and camp, please contact us to discuss.
  • Can I sign my child up for Weekend Camp and then extend?
    Yes, as long as there is room in the bunk you can extend your child's stay at camp.

  • How long is the camp season?
    Camp is 6.5 weeks. The dates for summer 2024 are June 27-August 11. Mandatory staff training dates will be announced shortly.
  • Do staff live in the bunks with the kids?
    Staff live in counsellor rooms in the bunks.
  • What is the average age of your staff?
    Staff generally range in age from 18-22 years old.
  • Do staff get days off?
    Yes, staff get 5 days off during the summer.
  • Do you get a lot of new staff each summer?
    Yes, in a usual summer at least half of our staff is new.
  • Are staff allowed cell phones in camp?
    Staff are allowed to bring their phones to camp but must be kept in their counsellor rooms at all times. Phones can never be used in front of campers.
  • Is there computer or internet access for staff?
    Staff can use the computer in the camp office at designated hours.
  • Can I do my laundry at camp?
    Laundry is done once a week for all campers and staff.
  • When do you start hiring staff?
    Staff can submit an online application starting in November.
  • What support-staff positions are available?
    KITCHEN STAFF – Includes food prep and dining hall cleaning ​ DRIVER – Must be 21 years and older with a valid Quebec drivers licence ​​ HOUSEKEEPING – Basic cleaning around camp ​ MAINTENANCE – Working with our head of maintenance helping in all areas of camp. ​ NIGHT WATCHMAN – Willing to work from midnight–7:00am
